Dienstag in Berlin: Diskussion über Netzneutralität (in den USA)

Am kommenden Dienstag, den 11. Dezember, findet im Newsroom von Zeit-Online in Berlin eine Veranstaltung zum Thema „The Campaign For Net Neutrality In The US“ statt. Da werde ich mich mit Ben Scott über die Netzneutralitätsdebatte in den USA und Parallelen zur deutschen Debatte unterhalten. Ben Scott war früher einer der Köpfe hinter der savetheinternet.com – Kampagne in den USA, bevor er als Berater für Hillary Clinton ins US-Außenministerium wechselte. Seit einigen Monaten wohnt und arbeitet er in Berlin.

Will there be an internet in which website owners can pay for a faster data upload, in which you can choose between different providers for different types of content – a time when the economy regulates the access to data on the internet? There is an ongoing debate in Germany on what is called net neutrality and why this neutrality should be preserved. Markus Beckedahl, founder of netzpolitik.org, is one of the key actors of the net neutrality movement in Germany. In the USA, the debates on net neutrality have always had a strong focus on the question of free speech and the dangers of government regulation and corporate control. Ben Scott was an important figure in the US campaign for net neutrality – savetheinternet.com – as policy director for the Free Press, the largest non-profit organization in the US dealing exclusively with media and communications policy. Markus Beckedahl and Ben Scott join ZEIT ONLINE and newthinking for a discussion in the Berlin Newsroom of ZEIT ONLINE. The main questions are: What are the differences between the debates in the USA and in Germany? What are the common goals of the international movement for network neutrality? Is a free and open internet still a ground for campaigning of he civil society?
