BERLIN Five years ago, Stefano Maffulli joined a group of European software developers in their late 20s who shared a common vision: to make software free of charge and free of copyright strings so digital innovation could flourish.
At the time, the newly founded Free Software Foundation Europe was little more than a bunch of wide-eyed idealists, pursuing what Maffulli said was an agenda few consumers in Europe cared about or even understood.
