Although we recognise an important role for trade secrets and proprietary knowledge, the School also recognises that open standards – and open source solutions – have been instrumental in the rapid growth and enduring success of the internet. Furthermore, we recognise that appropriation and reuse – rip, mix, and burn – are central to the progress of innovation in digital technology and the creative industries. A balanced view of intellectual property, therefore, recognises the crucial role of open source solutions and a „creative commons“.

The School of Computing for the Creative Industries will release its learning materials under a Creative Commons license to ensure their widest possible dissemination and use. Technical facilities in the School will be built on open source platforms. We will support students who wish to release projects under free and open source licenses.
