Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) are agreements between governments that facilitate the exchange of information relevant to an investigation happening in at least one of those countries. MLATs can be bilateral (country to country), multilateral, regional (like the Organization of American States), and country to regional (the United States with all the member States of the European Union).

Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) have an important impact on the way that a user’s data is shared with foreign governments for criminal investigations and prosecutions. As part of Access‘ mission to defend and extend the digital rights of users at risk around the world, this website makes it easy to explore the text and geographical scope of Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs). Click on the Map to find treaties relating to a specific country, or browse the policy analysis and FAQ Page to learn a little more about the way that MLATs work in practice and why the system is so desperately in need of reform.

    1. ich habe mal auf die USA geklickt und dort stand dann: Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance between the European Union and the United States of America
